Here's some more from our keenest corrspondent, Garry Phillips the down under new routing machine....the first mail was from the start of June and the second a couple of days ago....and as usual he's been a very busy boy!!! A view of one of Garrys new routes, a seacliff 7C...looks great... "Hi Richie hope all is well over there? I'm off to the Grampians in three weeks time to try project and repeat some more classics, then after that I’m off to New Zealand on 20th of July to go ice and mixed climbing; I'm aiming for first ascents of classic lines as well as some repeats. After that I’ll be back to Tas and try to put this on to our mountains. Then at end of year then I’m off to Canada water fall climbing and then to the Bugaboos after some work, and then down to yosemite. Awesome hey? I’ve been working like a dog to try and save the money though! Anyway I did another classic route on natural gear the other day its around 7c if it was bolted so its pretty spicey. All this up an over hanging arete above the sea ill send you some shots some time when i can get a photographer. Here’s a view of the line though (3 pitches on awesome white granite) Any way my plans still haven’t changed I’m still keener than ever and am getting into the bigger alpine walls and crags, thanks mate Garry.
Email 2 25th July Thanks for the mail & I’m having a great time. I climbed some new projects in the Grampians which was great and like you guessed I'm in New Zealand ice climbing at the moment. Its fantastic being up in the hills on steep water ice with no one around. Its like Scotland to me! We are going back in again in a few days after this bad weather passes and then after this we will fly into the mountains and do a few long alpine routes. I have some great photos as well so ill send them to you soon. Ive been mainly climbing in those Mescalitoes lately on rock and they are pretty good. I also managed to climb two FA trad routes before leaving as well to NZ. They were about 7c and 7c+, the latter is madness, the upper section is on micro wires and I fell from the top on one go and i thought i was gonna snap them. But it held! Next go, purely on adrenaline I sent it though. Any way mate keep in touch and have fun even no matter what the grade….all the best…" Click here to see more photos of Garry's exploits...
